The Silent Killer of ERP Implementation: Misalignment
Most SAP ERP implementations that fail do so not because of the technology, but because of the decisions made before the build started.

In my last newsletter, we explored process failures, emphasizing the need for deep data and process cleansing before any major software implementation.
Today, I want to address another important systemic challenge that can cause a digital transformation project to fail: misalignment.
But why do processes go out of sync?
Misalignment isn't random; it's usually rooted in one of three foundational areas:
- Strategy & Goals: If departmental goals contradict the main corporate objective.
- Organizational Structure & Culture: If incentives push teams in opposite directions (e.g., sales is rewarded for volume, but logistics is criticized for rush shipments).
- Process Design & Management: If the documented workflow does not connect seamlessly across functional areas.
When one or more of these elements are broken, processes start to drift away from the core business purpose. For example, sales are incentivized in one way, but logistics operates in another.
The risk of ignoring it:
Just as with process failures, if you implement a new system without fixing these misalignments, the problems don't disappear; they'll become hard-coded into your new solution. This creates a significant, systemic overhead at the operational level.

It is not a secondary task - it is a strategic business asset that must be managed with a comprehensive data governance framework throughout the entire project lifecycle. While poor data quality can derail an IT project at any stage, often resulting in significant financial losses, ignoring data quality can quickly escalate from technical issues to severe business risks.
- Even if you improve the processes to prevent misalignment, if your data is compromised, your new solution will still fail to deliver reliable results.
- Therefore, before we discuss systemic efficiency, we have one final reminder: Quality data is the foundation of any successful IT project.
